As the warmer weather rolls in, you may be feeling the need to do some spring cleaning! Spring is a great time of year to give your apartment a little refresh. With apartment living in particular, clutter can accumulate quickly in our living spaces, causing stress, anxiety, and a general feeling of unease.
If you're feeling overwhelmed by your apartment, don't worry—we are going to go over a few simple tips and tricks for decluttering your space and creating a peaceful, organized living environment. Let’s get started!
A great way to kick off your decluttering journey is to get rid of any trash and items that are broken, old, or expired. This doesn’t have to be an in-depth search, but a quick overview of your space to spot any items that can get tossed or recycled.
Look for expired food, cosmetics, and cleaning products that are taking up space. Empty containers or duplicate items that are still in good condition can be set aside for donation. Additionally, any broken or damaged items you have set aside with the intention of fixing later need to be re-evaluated.
Done with this step? Great! Now that you have done a quick sweep of your apartment, you can decide which area to tackle next.
Decluttering can be a very overwhelming task, especially if you have accumulated a lot of stuff, and if you try to take care of everything all at once, giving up may seem like the best option. This is why our second tip is to work in small sections!
Breaking things up makes this task feel less stressful and each time you finish a section, the sense of accomplishment provides motivation to keep going! A great way to do this is by tackling one room or area at a time. Another way to break it up is to block off a certain amount of time each day or even each week to get as much done as you can.
Try to find a method that fits your schedule and is something that you can stick with long-term!
This next tip is the key to actually making progress when decluttering your apartment. Sometimes when you are trying to get organized it seems like your stuff just gets moved around and you get nowhere. To solve this problem, you are going to want to try the box method. With the box method, you can narrow down your clutter and plan your next moves. Grab three boxes, bins, or bags and categorize each one with the following labels:
It's up to you to decide whether you want to empty each box, bin, or bag after completing each section or once you have gone through your entire apartment. Just remember to actually drop off your donations, take out your trash, or relocate your items or you will be back to square one.
If you are looking for a place to drop off your donations,
ACCESS and
Overflow Thrift Store both keep an updated wish list of items on their websites.
Food at First accepts non-perishable food items throughout the week and
The SHOP is an on-campus food pantry for Iowa State University students.
Now you are officially decluttered, try to maintain that level of organization you just worked so hard on! A great way to do this is to pick a time each month or each week to do a brief run-through and take care of anything that has accumulated over time.
Another action you can take is being more intentional than buying new things. Ask yourself how useful your purchase will be. Yes, Ames offers a ton of
