Autumn has officially begun and there is so much to do in Ames this time of year. Whether you are a long-time resident of Ames or new to the city, you are bound to find an activity you love. Here are just a few of our favorites!
The most recognizable sign of fall is the changing leaves and chill in the air and there is no better time to enjoy the outdoors than now. Lucky for you, Ames offers a ton of great spots.
First on the list is Iowa State University as it’s a wonderful place to take a walk, have a picnic, or snap some beautiful fall photos. Additionally, Iowa State’s campus has over 2,500 public works of art, with many of those pieces being located outdoors, around central campus!
Thinking about visiting? Iowa State University is located
West of Interstate 35 and North of Highway 30 and has a few
different parking options.
Reiman Gardens is another great place to spend your time in nature. This 17-acre botanical garden is located just south of campus and offers indoor and outdoor spaces.
Inside you’ll find the Christina Reiman butterfly garden and a spacious conservatory with tropical plants and seasonal displays. Outside is filled with thousands of plants, an Iowa themed children’s garden and is also home to Elwood, the World’s Tallest Concrete Gnome.
Make sure to check out
Spirits in the Gardens from the 21st through 23rd of October!
This popular fall celebration includes games, shows, candy, and showcases over a thousand hand-carved pumpkins.
Now direction might be a little tricky. To get there you will want to find the
intersection of University Boulevard and South 16th Street and turn towards Jack Trice Stadium. There are signs pointing the way once you turn but checking out
this map is helpful too!
Nestled in the northern part of Ames, this park is loved by many Ames residents and visitors. The park includes a beautiful lake, multi-use trails, picnic areas, and so much more. If you are looking for a quiet, serene place to hang out, Ada Hayden Heritage Park is the place to be!
Better yet,
getting there is super easy! Just head north on Grand Avenue and you’ll run right into it!
By now you are probably thinking, ‘That all sounds great but where can I get some food around here?’ Well lucky for you, Ames is full of fantastic dining options for almost any craving!
If you are in the mood for some barbeque you could check out the one-of-a-kind dining experience at Hickory Park. Since 1970, Hickory Park has become an Ames tradition offering a wide variety of options but specializing in hickory smoked meats and, of course, barbeque.
One of the best brunch spots in town is The Cafe in north Ames. The Cafe is one of many locally-owned restaurants in the city and offers seasonal dishes and freshly-baked bread. In addition to serving a delicious brunch, The Cafe has a great lunch, dinner, and drink menu as well.
Want to try something new? Cafe Beaudelaire, also known as Cafe B, brings the flavors of Brazil to central Iowa. Located just steps from campus, Cafe B is for sure a spot especially loved by ISU students. Their menu includes some South American favorites like yucca fries and feijoada, a flavorful stew made from black beans, pork, and beef.
With the holidays right around the corner, Autumn is a great time to start buying (or at least brainstorming) what you want to get for your loved ones. The North Grand Mall is a great place to start. Here you'll find department stores, specialty stores, boutiques, and even an indoor farmers market on the weekends!
Main street in the Historic District is another great area to do some shopping. With over 50 locally-owned shops, galleries, and restaurants you’ll absolutely find something for everyone! Better yet, there’s even something for the kids this time of year. On October 28th, from 10am to 2pm,
Main Street is hosting Trick or Treating where everyone is invited to dress up and grab some candy!
Last but not least is cheering on the Iowa State Cyclones at Jack Trice Stadium. Saturdays in Ames are always full of spirit this time of year with a great tailgating atmosphere and fans everywhere. The remaining home games of the season are scheduled for October 29th, November 5th and November 19th.
